Advanced Training for Teachers at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine
Labor trifft Lehrer (LTL)
The LTL program at the MDC conducts one-day courses on themes from current science that are relevant to the high school curriculum. The program is continually expanded and adapted to include interesting current topics. The courses are officially recognized within the framework of continued professional development for teachers by the Berlin Senate Administration for Education, Science and Youth.
Course structure
Small groups of teachers (6-12 participants) are integrated into an MDC research group for one day. The program includes presentations by scientists and experiments that teachers themselves carry out. Courses are based on current themes from research and are supervised by MDC scientists. They give teachers the opportunity to experience everyday work in a research lab and develop direct contacts with scientists. The courses also produce teaching materials that can be taken back to the classroom for work with pupils.
Themes
The current program can be found at https://www.mdc-berlin.de/ltl. The portfolio includes courses on themes such as stem cells, cancer, depression, fluorescent dyes, drug development, etc. Most of the courses have been designed for biology and chemistry teachers at the secondary level of high school.
Teacher reviews
"Both the sessions and the materials provide a very good update for teachers. The courses are scientific but very comprehensible. Thanks very much! Give us more!"
In the 2013/2014 school year, participating teachers evaluated the program with a score of 1.5 (on a 1-6 scale, with 1 being the best score). More than 80% said that their expectations on the course, such as new scientific information, new contacts, and stimulating new ideas for the classroom had been satisfied. 73% of the participants said they would highly recommend the program as it currently stands to others.
Advanced Training for Teachers in the Life Science Learning Lab
Scientific Lecture Series “Perspectives of the Life Sciences”
Scientific lectures related to the core curriculum are held in the Max Delbrück Communications Center (MDC.C) on Campus Berlin-Buch. Teachers can attend the lectures together with their course students, learn about the latest findings and status of research, and discuss these with experts.
Current Status of Gene Technology and Evolution Research
Continuing education in the German Bundestag: The latest research findings are presented regarding genetics and the evolutionary development of selected organisms as well as disease-oriented genome research on human subjects. A discussion is held with a member of the Bundestag on the legal issues and ethics of stem cell research. Participants receive educational and didactic materials to aid in presenting the research results in the classroom.
Experiment Courses and Lab Visits
Secondary level biology and chemistry teachers can familiarize themselves with the new lab courses offered at the Life Science Learning Lab, including the corresponding teaching outlines or scripts. Opportunity is given to discuss these and also to visit a research lab on Campus Berlin-Buch. Upon request, the team of the Life Science Learning Lab will present the current lab courses and teaching materials for chemistry and biology to the faculty department meeting of the respective school.
Advanced Training for Teachers in the Research Garden
The Research Garden Team offers certified advanced training for kindergarten teachers and elementary school teachers who would like to carry out experiments in their own classrooms.
